Into the Wild is the true story of Chris McCandless, a young Emory graduate who is found dead in the Alaskan wilderness in September , when he is twenty-four. McCandless grows up in wealthy Virginia suburbs of Washington, D. By the time that McCandless is a senior at Emory, he lives monastically, has driven away most of his friends with his intensity and moral certitude, and barely keeps in touch with his parents. He never contacts his parents or sister, Carine, again. Not too long after leaving Atlanta, McCandless deserts his car in the desert after a flash flood wets the engine, and from then on, he hitchhikes around the Northwest, getting jobs here and there but not staying anywhere for long, often living on the streets, and keeping as little money and as few possessions as he can.

The researchers chose the novel "Pompeii" for the experiment, due to its strong narrative and page-turning plot. Many people can recall reading at least one cherished story that they say changed their life. Now researchers at Emory University have detected what may be biological traces related to this feeling: Actual changes in the brain that linger, at least for a few days, after reading a novel. Their findings, that reading a novel may cause changes in resting-state connectivity of the brain that persist, were published by the journal Brain Connectivity. Neurobiological research using functional magnetic resonance imaging fMRI has begun to identify brain networks associated with reading stories. Most previous studies have focused on the cognitive processes involved in short stories, while subjects are actually reading them as they are in the fMRI scanner.

As a Freshman Option student, the first two years of general education prerequisites are taken at Emory College or Oxford College. Students may apply and be admitted to the nursing program while the prerequisites are in progress. All required courses must be completed before enrolling in the BSN program in the fall semester. Emory and Oxford students applying to the BSN first-degree program will automatically be admitted to the School of Nursing if they meet certain requirements. The nursing program is designed to be completed in four semesters of full-time enrollment.
