Background There is considerable debate about how to review the literature in grounded theory research. Notably, grounded theory typically discourages reviewing the literature before data are collected and analysed, so that researchers do not form preconceptions about the theory. However, it is likely researchers will need to review the literature to show they intend to address a gap in knowledge with their research. This might confuse novice researchers, especially given that different approaches to grounded theory can have contrasting positions concerning how and when literature should be reviewed. Aim To provide an overview of grounded theory and how different approaches might tackle literature reviews.
Grounded Theory and the Literature Review
What actually is Grounded Theory? A brief introduction | Quirkos qualitative analysis software
The term grounded theory denotes dual referents: a a method consisting of flexible methodological strategies and b the products of this type of inquiry. Increasingly, researchers use the term to mean the methods of inquiry for collecting and, in particular, analyzing data. The methodological strategies of grounded theory are aimed to construct middle-level theories directly from data analysis. The inductive theoretical thrust of these methods is central to their logic. The resulting analyses build their power on strong empirical foundations. These analyses provide focused, abstract, conceptual theories that explain the studied empirical phenomena.
This line from the Spanish poet Antonio Machado captures the spirit of my research process and the theories that emerged from that process. Initially I set out, on what I thought was a well- traveled path, to find empirical evidence of what I knew to be true. I soon realized that conducting research centering on what matters to research participants— grounded theory research— means there is no path and, certainly, there is no way of knowing what you will find. The most difficult challenges of becoming a grounded theory researcher are:. Ironically or maybe not , these are also the challenges of Daring Greatly and living a courageous life.
On July 8, For a lot of students, Grounded Theory is used to describe a qualitative analytical method, where you create a coding framework on the fly, from interesting topics that emerge from the data. However, that's not really accurate. There is a lot more to it, and a myriad of different approaches.
